I set the EAC artist as "Various" to put the album in the Various folder within my library but that won't appear in the tags. Say for example I had a compilation called "example" with a band called "bandyband" on it I would do the following: Got more questions about this, can't get my head around it. What do I have to call the extended tag for that? Or at the very least I'd like to keep my "various" tag as the artist to keep winamp happy and then make them appear under the compilations in the ipod. Don't suppose theres a way around it is there?
I do like the idea of the individual tracks having the proper artist names, but I was really annoyed by that making them appear as individual songs in the artists list in winamp and the ipod so I stopped doing it. So I've since removed the individual artists from each track and put the artist name back on the front of the track name (EAC uses the / to split artist and track names for compilations) and gave them all an artist of "Various" still won't show up as a compilation in the ipod but at least I can find "various" in my artists list now and there arent annoying random tracks dotted all over the place. Then when I put the album on an ipod it didn't think it was a compilation, nor did it put it under Various in the artists list, it just placed extra songs under each individual artist which I found to be annoying as hell. I used "Various" as the artist name in EAC then named the individual tracks with a / which made the tags come out with the bit as the artist instead of "Various". I've been messing on with these recently too but found it all a bit of a pain. You can also set MP3tag to add a column for these tags to make life easier. Remember, these are extended tags so you will need to add new extended tags in MP3tag. I used to use this convention, but have started tagging the other way. For example - TRACK=Ulrich Schnauss / If You've Never BeenAway. Some people prefer to have the album artist as the artist for each track and have the TRACK tag incuding the actual orgianl artist. If you use iTunes it wont recognise COMPILATION, but will recognise ITUNESCOMPILATION. That way i can find it on my Squeezebox by searching for "Tom Middleton", rather than trying to remember individual artists tracks.īut i also need to set COMPILATION=1 to keep it together as a single album. Then i also add ALBUMARTIST=Tom Middleton, who mixed the CD. I like to have each track proper tagged (using MP3tag of course) by the correct artist. One such DJ mix is 'The Trip Mixed by Tom Middleton'. That way you can still search for stuff easily and have a sensible folder structure.įor example, i have many Various Artist albums, compilations and DJ mixes. iPod, Squeezebox etc?īut the key for good compilation management is making use of extended tags - such as ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION. Depends on personal preference and also on what you want to use them on, i.e.
